Ads Just Got More Invasive

Posted on 27 May, 2007 at 2:45pm with 4 comments

Fuelcast My wife and I had to fill up our car with gas, (something I am beginning to loath more and more with each trip to the gas station) when we came across something new (at least for us) at the pump. It seems that at certain gas stations, dealing with the fact that we have to fill up our cars with toxic chemicals for ridiculous amounts of money will be the least of our worries. Yes, now we have to be subjected to advertising. Bad advertising.

These ads are not your basic billboard advertising. No, these are full video ads… With very loud sound. So unless you are willing to close your eyes and plug your ears while pumping your gas, you are going to be stuck getting pounded by some 30 second plea for you to spend your money on whatever the person on the screen is peddling. Gas just got that much more noxious.

Some Random Dude – Now With 50% Less Nerd!

Posted on 16 March, 2007 at 12:55pm with 4 comments

This blog has been going through quite a metamorphosis in the past few months as I continue to look for that “right place”. I am personally becoming much less interested in the nuances of front-end programming and much more fascinated with the 50,000 foot view of design on the web, the inner-workings of web communities and the future of media in the internet-age. I will begin to focus much more thought and writing towards these sorts of subjects and spend much less time on subjects such as web development and even Flash to a certain extent.

I have been putting a lot of time and thought into web community, media and how people interact with them and I feel I have a lot to share. In addition, my hope is to begin moving out of the trenches of design/development and start becoming more involved in these subjects in my career as well. This shift is fairly easy to do in a blog, but not so easy to do in my career. My hope is that this thinking and writing I do on the subject will act as a catalyst for my own personal growth.

This blog has been an unbelievable channel of learning for myself since day one. I cannot wait to see what people teach me in the upcoming months. I am really looking forward to a change of topical venue – I hope you are as well.

The Sorry State of Online Advertising

Posted on 30 January, 2007 at 12:09am with 15 comments

For many, the internet symbolizes innovation, creativity and unique expression. Why then is internet advertising so unoriginal, uninspired and uninterested in the people it is targeting? Online advertising symbolizes all that is wrong with the current state of the web. The basic model of advertising bombardment and sensory overload can ruin a site’s reputation while rarely giving the financial return expected. Why have site creators and online advertisers settled for such an unbecoming system? For many site creators, the allure of making income from their site outweighs the needs of their audience. This approach can ultimately cause much more bad than good.

Over the next few weeks, I will be writing about online advertising. This article will focus on what is currently wrong with the most common advertising model used online, the second will discuss my opinions on a better alternative and the third will flush out those ideas into pragmatic examples.
