Actionscript 3 Layout Organizers Examples and Source Code

A while back, I posted a basic example of layout organizers and layout organizers applied to video. I kept talking about how cool I considered this idea to be, yet I had yet to truly explain the idea and (more importantly) the source code for people to download. I wanted to make sure the code was at a good spot before releasing it; I believe that is now the case. You will find examples, the basic gist on how it works and some possible reasons why layout organizers may just make your life easier.

Actionscript 3 Video Color Sampler Experiment

Actionscript 3 Video Sampler

A while back I published a small Actionscript experiment that sampled colors of video and displayed a matrix of the sampled colors it retrieved. I mentioned that I would be posting a follow-up once I ported all the code to Actionscript 3 and was able to do some interesting experiments with this technique. The current color sampler can give you the rgb code, red channel, green channel, blue channel, hue, saturation and brightness. It took a bit of time, but I have made five different motion treatments generated from my color sampling engine. The port of the color sampler class to Actionscript 3 made a significant difference in terms of performance and offered many more possibilities to what I could attempt. These five experiments are really just scratching the surface of what can be done with this technique - I have already thought of 3 or 4 different methods I would like to create.

This Week’s Weekly Links of the Week - Week 52

It is a shame that the 52nd week of the weekly links was delivered late. Considering how bad I have been about this feature lately, it is not much of a surprise however. Still, one year of links is pretty impressive - I honestly cannot believe that it has already been that long. I would love to celebrate the anniversary by getting a ton of extra links dropped in the comments. How about it?

Enjoy the links.

TheApt.com (Beta) Launched

the apartment A site I helped work on, The Apartment, just launched. The project was to rebuild their site/blog in a much more interactive model with greater potential for user interaction. The site was built in Flex and was relatively large in scale. On top of it, this was my first Flex project, so it was quite a learning experience.

I definitely suggest checking it out. There were some very large technical challenges for this project, as well as a few we still need to tackle. Still, we are pretty stoked about its (beta) launch. One work of warning - the content can be a little risqué, so I would think twice about opening this site up at work.

For any of you wondering why I have not written a very noteworthy article in a while, this project had a little something to do with that. Hopefully things will be calming down a little from now on and I can get back to my regular schedule.
