36 Clicks Is Back In Business

Posted on 14 November, 2007 at 10:29am with no comments

For those of you who are new around here, I started a photoblog, 36 Clicks, this summer to create a better way to show my photos. Well, due to my involvement in the Current TV Viewpoints project, my blogging diminished significantly and my photoblogging came to a complete standstill.

Well, I have spent a lot of time to make the photoblog relevant again by seeding the blog with daily photos until the middle of December (at least). If you have yet to check out 36 Clicks and have a thing for photography, you may want to check it out. I will be doing my best to continue seeding the photoblog so that there will rarely be large dry spells.

Additionally, I am planning to take a break some time after the Viewpoints project is completed. I will be attempting to finally smooth out all the edges with the design and functionality of 36 Clicks during that time. Until then, I hope you put up with the photoblog as-is and perhaps even subscribe to the feed.

My New Ultra Wide-Angle Lens

I had been wanting to do this for some time, I have finally picked up a wide-angle lens – and I decided to go really wide. Until picking this lens up, I had never shot with a wide-angle before other than my Canon XT’s 17-55 zoom kit lens… But that definitely does not count. If I was going to shoot with a wide-angle, I wanted it to be for my film Nikon F3 camera. After reading a great review, I chose the Nikon 20mm f4 over the Nikon 20mm f2.8. I am usually a sucker for wide apertures, but the extremely small size of the lens (seriously, the thing is tiny), its 52mm diameter and the renowned sharpness and low distortion of this lens sold me. I know that shooting in low light is going to be more difficult with this lens, but my recent switch to 400 ISO film will help that out.

Some Random Dude Is On a (Blog) Diet

Posted on 2 August, 2007 at 10:33am with 1 comment »

After a relatively brief but substantiative discussion with Kellie and a lot of thinking on my own, I have decided to shake things up a bit. I made the decision to write in a format that allowed a more steady stream of content to come in on a daily basis. That format has unfortunately sucked me dry while arguably adding very little to the quality of content on this blog. In my opinion, this led to a much dumber Some Random Dude. Sure, it updated frequently, but rarely were the updated truly inspiring.

All that being said, I feel there is a lot to be said about weekly features, regimen and structure for a blog. The audience knows what to expect and the constant content keeps them continually engaged. However, as a one person show, the number of posts per week definitely has an indirect relationship on the number of serious articles per month. If I could keep this format while keeping quality up, I would not think twice about doing so. However, there are only 24 hours in a day.

My Divorce With Mint

Posted on 20 June, 2007 at 11:37am with 3 comments

Over the recent months, I have tried to of my web stats addiction, now I have decided to cut this whole problem off at the pass. This weekend, I actually removed Mint from my server – and I haven’t felt better. It is not that Mint was bad, it was just too good. Looking back, I spent more time looking at my statistics than working or writing on my blog. From this point on, I am going to be less concerned about the traction of this site and more so about delivering quality articles, content and experience to the users. It has been a long while since I have written a design article, something I am fairly disappointed about. Hopefully all the time I spent looking and mulling over my stats will now be spent actually doing something worthwhile.

I do not think many folks will argue that the content on this site has been subpar in the past few months. Sure, I have added a photoblog and Comment Love, but it retrospect, that really is not too significant for that amount of time. I have tons of articles in the queue that are half-written, my hope is those can be finished and published within the coming weeks. My congrats to Shaun Inman for making a truly powerful web statistics package – I just found it a little too powerful…

Semi-Minor Updates to Some Random Dude

Posted on 29 May, 2007 at 11:10am with 3 comments

Have you noticed that lately I write more about this blog than actual articles? That is definitely a problem – hopefully all these proposed changes will be done soon and I can get back to actually writing again.

I have updated the Comment Love section of the site to show the full list of commenters for the current month. As can be expected, Kellie and Wild Guess are on a whole other level. In addition, I added Twitter updates to the front page although they may move around by week’s end – please give me your thoughts on where they are and if you find them useful. Also, if you have not added me to your Twitter friends list yet, by all means, head on over to my Twitter page and do so. I like friends.

There are a few other minor tweaks to the site that I would like to knock off and then I will get into refining different visual and functional elements of the site. The photoblog is slowly coming along due to extra responsibilities in the last week. Still, I hope to have it publicly launched soon (I am refraining from any deadline or timetables).
