Comment Love for May and June 2008

Posted on 1 July, 2008 at 1:07pm with 4 comments

Well, May and June were supposed to be a big couple months in order to generate enough comments for a special Comment Love project. I dropped the ball – big time. The beginning of May started off really well and then tapered off extremely quickly and I have yet to recover. A couple large projects, a vacation and a continuing battle with burnout have done my blogging in for about a month and a half. I know I will get back on the horse eventually, it just has not happened yet.

All that said, the charities that we were supporting for May and June, the International Rescue Committee’s Iraqi Refugee Program and the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust were extremely important and I feel extremely guilty that my otherwise unimportant problems got in the way of hitting our goal. Therefore, I decided to donate the maximum amount ($100 to each charity) even though we barely hit half that mark in comments. I really dropped the ball in terms of posting – frankly, I’m surprised we got as much as we did.

The posting frequency will be back up to normal levels soon – hell, just posting this article was a major accomplishment for me in my current state. Ironically, I have been doing a tremendous amount of interesting work that I am really looking forward to sharing. Be on the lookout for posts sooner than later.

Comment Love for July 2007

Posted on 1 August, 2007 at 1:29pm with no comments

It was a pretty week month for July’s Comment Love. There were 48 comments this month which totaled $24.00. All $24.00 was donated to KQED.org this month.

The reason for the low comments is directly related with the poor writing for this month. I was hoping the two experiments I did would gain some traction, but unfortunately that was not the case. Still, 24 bucks to KQED is not half bad. My hope is we will get back to the $50 area next month…

Here’s to better writing from me in the month of August.

Another Site Joins in the Comment Love

Posted on 2 May, 2007 at 12:24pm with 1 comment »

Ever-so-slowly, but surely, the Comment Love concept is starting to spread beyond this site. Didn’t You Hear started a similar project couple months ago and now Trying To Follow has begun a program as well. I am deeply encouraged that this small blog is helping encourage other bloggers to help make a small, yet valuable statement/impact.

In my mind, the financial donation is by far the least important part of the idea behind Comment Love – the real beauty of it is that the blog owner creates a very clear message that not only are they willing to give back, but they are willing to do so in a very public and social manner – hopefully inspiring and encouraging others to do something similar. $30 to $50 dollars a month, while important, is still a drop in the bucket. However, using a website or blog as a megaphone for the importance of giving back to society can make big waves. Nothing is wrong with doing your part silently and I can understand peoples’ reservations to publicizing what should ultimately be a very personal and intimate decision. The intention is not to promote who is giving to charity or how much, but to promote the action of giving back.

I am deeply encouraged by peoples’ deep interest in the idea behind Comment Love and their willingness to become a part of it. It may only be a whisper, but it nonetheless gives me a lot of hope.

Comment Love Spotting

Posted on 8 March, 2007 at 10:52pm with 3 comments

I was hoping this would happen for quite some time…

It appears that another site has decided to adopt their own version of Comment Love. Didn’t You Hear has added a feature called Comment Charity. The program is very similar to the one here – for every comment, 50 cents is donated to charity. For Didn’t You Hear, the comment donations go to The Global Fund, a organization fighting AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. If you ask me, that is a pretty worthwhile cause. But, hey, don’t take my word for it, read up about what Didn’t You Hear is doing from their announcement of the program. May I add that the site is quite lovely, I am already a subscriber and regular reader.

I know that people in the creative field, including bloggers, can be very defensive and protective of their creation. For bloggers, unique content and features are extremely important to their “success”. All the time, we see people “calling out” others who they allege copy or steal their idea. I usually am not too uptight about people “borrowing” my work or ideas. In this case in particular, I am absolutely ecstatic that another blogger has decided to take on a project like this. In fact, I hope more people do the same. Comment Love is an idea which I think is too promising to hold on to.

With Great PageRank Comes Great Responsibility

For nearly two years, I have written for this humble blog. As can be expected over time, the amount of visitors has increased from a tiny trickle, to a small trickle. That being said, the amount of unique visits I get a month, roughly 15,000, is a pretty considerable audience for just your average person. Think about it, if someone told you that they spoke to 15,000 people a month about a certain subject, that would seem pretty impressive. The web has allowed anyone, with little or no money, to do just that or more. Taking a step back, I find that absolutely amazing. Taking another step back, I feel a sense of responsibility to use it for more than just finding it absolutely amazing.
