The whole Second Life phenomenon has been quite interesting to watch evolve. For those of you still somewhat ignorant to the game, it centers around the premise that its world is completely flexible – with users able to create new content and interaction for the Second Life world. Hell, it even has its own monetary system, the Linden. What is so compelling about the concept of a completely free world is when people try to take the world in a completely different direction. Recently, long time gamers decided to nuke two corporate-owned stores (American Apparel and Reebok).
The person responsible for destroying these two stores is not too happy about the direction the game’s world is moving and came to the conclusion that blowing some things up was a good solution. This same person apparently wants the creators of Second Life to give his army (yes, he had an army) the ability to vote on future changes. Through this little experiment, “citizens” have begun to rebel and ask for more democratic power. I find this all extremely interesting. I am quite curious how these same people will react if they do not get what they want. It could soon be a very unhappy (not to mention radioactive) world in Second Life…
I am not a gamer myself, I myself look forward to seeing how this pans out. This has to be the first case where violent actions in a game’s world impacts they way that world works.
I am desperately trying to make some more improvements/additions to this site but time just is not on my side. I am putting thought into actually investing in a developer helping out with certain pieces of functionality I do not feel comfortable doing. Note, this is still very up in the air, so please do not start advising people to hit me up. Still, if I do in fact move forward with this, I would love to get any suggestions for people willing to do some PHP/MySQL work – paid of course.
I genuinely have been listening to everyone’s suggestions and I will be attempting to add many of those to the site (if not more). I finally bubbled the comment love monthly total above the fold as can be seen in the header. This is obviously cosmetic more than anything, but it’s one less thing to complete.
Be patient folks, there are some pretty ambitious plans on the horizon. Hopefully they will be reality sooner than any of us think.
For nearly two years, I have written for this humble blog. As can be expected over time, the amount of visitors has increased from a tiny trickle, to a small trickle. That being said, the amount of unique visits I get a month, roughly 15,000, is a pretty considerable audience for just your average person. Think about it, if someone told you that they spoke to 15,000 people a month about a certain subject, that would seem pretty impressive. The web has allowed anyone, with little or no money, to do just that or more. Taking a step back, I find that absolutely amazing. Taking another step back, I feel a sense of responsibility to use it for more than just finding it absolutely amazing.

Change Is A-Comin’

Well, yesterday was very fruitful – if this pace continues, Some Random Dude will have quite a few enjoyable new features/trickets throughout the site. My hope is that all of this will make the site more enjoyable to come to and interact with. A few features I am all but sure will not be implemented by May 1 but will come to existence eventually. A lot of this productivity is due to the fact that I finally invested the time to make a local instance of the blog on my laptop so that I was not making direct changes to the live site. The more I think about it, the old process just seems absolutely ridiculous. I was always so concerned about the live site that I was always extremely hesitant to make serious changes due to the potential consequences. Now with a staging instance, I can break that blog all I want until I get the code right.
This weekend I was able to finish up these three features – Comment Love is, well, getting some love:
It is not huge, but I think these will be nice additions to the site. Another piece of the puzzle I am really working towards is a much larger role for photography on the site. I have been running through some options and I think I have come to a good solution. The implementation is gong to take a bit longer, but the result will be much nicer. I really hope these changes end up being successful, my feeling is they will.
