A while back, I published some work on AS3 layout organizers. The basic premise was to use virtual “containers” of a collection of DisplayObjects to create special layouts, such as a grid or ellipse. The project turned out to be quite enjoyable and I have used this library for almost every project I have worked on since I wrote it. With Flash 10’s introduction of 3d, it seemed appropriate to branch out these organizers into their 3d counterparts. In addition, I have spent a considerable amount of time re-writing a large portion of the core code to make it easier to use and more efficient. I was hoping to release the code in this post as well, but it just is not quite there yet. So, consider this a preview of the revamped library. Read the rest of this post…

Processing Experiment – Helix
Posted on 12 November, 2007 at 9:45am with 5 comments
Buddies and colleagues of mine told me years ago to get into Processing – to which I never did. Well, I finally hunkered down and began to fiddle with it. I should have done it years ago. Because it’s Java-based, there a plethora of libraries to make things which would otherwise be impossible to do in Flash extremely easy. For myself, the simple ability to output to an image sequence or Quicktime file sealed it for me. Below is the first sketch I did in Processing – comprised of a little more than 30 lines of code.
Papervision 3d Public Beta Announced
Posted on 11 July, 2007 at 3:40pm with 8 comments

After all the hype and excitement, another big benchmark has been achieved for the open source 3d Actionscript library, Papervision 3d. Papervision is now in public beta and it is well worth playing with this library if you have not yet done so.
I have done some work with the library months ago, however it was understandably hard to work with from time to time. I cannot think of a more ambitious Actionscript project around – this project’s potential knows no ceiling. There are still some very pragmatic issues that cause concern such as performance and initialization times. Still, used correctly, this library literally opens up a whole new dimension for Actionscripters.
Unfortunately, I cannot show the Papervision work that I have previously done due to privacy agreements. However, I plan to get my hands dirty with this code again in the near future – I will no doubt post my results.
Daily Delicious – Sandy Actionscript 3D Library Tutorials
Posted on 5 February, 2007 at 12:25pm with 3 comments
3D Actionscript/Flash seems to be the big trend as of late with some really impressive open source libraries becoming available to the public. The two most comprehensive Flash 3D libraries seem to be Sandy (currently available) and Papervision (in private beta) which I wrote about earlier. My experience with 3D within Flash is basically non-existent, so when I ran across this exhaustive Sandy tutorial I felt like I hit the mother-lode.
I spent quite a few years of my life playing in the 3D environment with modeling and rendering, so I feel like I have a fairly good background to start from. Still, tackling 3D from a programatic standpoint is quite different and this set of tutorials is a huge help. The tutorials cover primitives, the camera, lighting, interaction and many other subjects. I have only had the chance to skim each topic and I already have learned quite a bit. If you are into Flash/Actionscript at all, I highly suggest this set of tutorials.
Daily Digg: Papervision (a Flash 3d engine) is going to be released as open source.

Recently, a lot of work has been done with 3d on the Actionscript front. Papervision, is throwing its hat into the ring as an open source Actionscript 3d engine. Obviously, having a 3d engine in Flash opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for what can be done within Flash and on the web. Be excited folks, this just adds another cool thing that can be done with Flash and just subtracts one more reason why people should be complaining about it being used.
