Weekly Photograph - Statues

Statues

If you live in San Francisco and have been anywhere remotely near the Ferry Building lately, then you have seen the sculpture on display on the corner of Embarcadero and Mission. The sculpture of a mother and her child, named Passage, is quite stunning. My wife and I were in the neighborhood with our cameras, so I thought I would take a few shots of it.

With something as impressive as this sculpture, it makes the job of the photographer so much easier. Nonetheless, I wanted to take a shot of the two figures at an angle and perspective which would abstract the piece one level further. Whenever I take a photo of what could be considered a work of art, I feel the need to create something entirely new from that piece in order to feel as if I have accomplished anything. Please do not mistake that thought with me equating myself as a professional photographer - or even a good photographer for that matter. In addition, I know there is a time and a place where capturing a scene, object or person as accurately and devoid of creative intervention is vital. Still, I still find myself feeling as if I have stolen something from the artist of the piece if I simply capture it in its basic beauty.

I don’t think you have stolen something from the artist. What about professional, sometimes Pulitzer prize winning photographers who capture interesting shots of the Taj Mahal at dawn, or other architectural icons?

The contrast is spectacular. The connotations I find in this photo is so ominous. You just got my vote. :-)

Thank you kindly. :) We’ll see how this plays out…

I’m intrigued by the voting model on JPG - there is no way to see how many people have voted which may end up making things more fair. I could see a lot of people looking for the most voted photos - thinking those would be an indicator of the best in the collection. This model seems to keep the hive-mind from taking over.

Kudos to JPG. :D
