Weekly Photograph - One Way

Hanging Clothes

This photo, One Way, not to be confused with Way One, is one of my favorites that I have posted to the site. I feel it is quite striking due to its simplicity, not despite it.

I obviously have a thing for road signs in SoMA - I am not particularly sure what that is all about… Still, I think this photo in particular is less about the sign, and more about the simple division of color and almost two-tone feel of the photo. I particularly like the orthogonal perspective of the scene with the band of black going off on a ever-so-slight angle. Just a tad off kilter - which can symbolize quite a few things about quite a few things.

Hi SomeRandom,

I like it … I’ve seen far too many photographs with an arrow or something similar where the photographer forced the “rule of thirds” (the arrow wouldn’t be at the edge, in other words) or didn’t understand that convincing the viewer’s eye to “follow the ‘action’ in the photograph” is a good thing.

(what does this photo look like in color, BTW - are the wall or sign colors particularly interesting? I like “heavily weathered” structures, myself :-)

Hi Len, thanks so much for the kind words.

I am actually really bad at the whole law-of-thirds approach. I tend to shoot first with little more than a sliver of an idea for composition. I many times keep the thought at its most infant form - to the point that I can rarely explain it as it’s more abstract than an actual flushed-out concept. This can be a strength and a weakness for just about all the photos I take.

For this photo, I just let the scene dictate the composition. I wanted a small glimpse of the background to show up in order to throw the scene a little off kilter. The colors of the wall were a light off-white beige and a dark brown - not a very attractive or striking combination. From my perspective, the colors got in the way of a scene that I otherwise really liked.

Nice photograph PJ, and somewhat thought provoking - makes me wonder what’s down that one way road… I’d like to think it’s some romantic and quaint place, but I’ve got a feeling it’ll be more like a McDonald’s or something :P
