Apologies on the blog silence

Posted on 20 May, 2009 at 1:25pm with 7 comments

As you may have seen in the past couple days, there has been basically radio silence on the blog. I am pretty tied up on a project that is taking all my time. So for the next week or so, there is not going to be too much activity on this site. After all this blows over, I will get back to business and begin the daily posts once again.

Apologies for the downtime

Posted on 2 April, 2009 at 11:37am with 7 comments

You may have noticed a lack of a full article in close to three weeks. This is mainly in part to a very busy schedule and some serious time dedicated to long-term projects. Unfortunately, this also has to do with me trying to alleviate some major server problems. In the past four days, I have had 8 system crashes, four of which happening on one day. This has led me to devote a large portion of time to remedy it and go on long (and overly-emotional) Twitter diatribes of my experience.

I have come to the conclusion that I just need to make a fresh start with a new hosting service. I have been with MediaTemple for years — the majority of which was on their Grid Service. Like many, I had my assorted collection of problems with the Grid, so I decided to move up to the DV. Due to recent events, I am thinking that is not the right fit either. So after chatting with a few folks, I am going to give Mosso’s new Cloud Server hosting a try. At this point, I just have a hard time justifying paying $100 a month for a VPS with 512 MB of dedicated memory when I can get 1GB of RAM for roughly half that price, based on my current traffic. This is going to suck up some time, so my posting will continue to be sparse, but my hope is this move will stop the crashes and I can once again get back to what this blog is about — writing articles.

Thanks for the patience.

Interview Video For sayhear.org

Posted on 6 March, 2009 at 12:18pm with 1 comment »

I have been meaning to post this video for a while, if only for the sake of posterity. Right before the election, myself and the folks at Gershoni whipped up SayHear. It was a blast to work on and we felt quite proud of the results. This whole project would not have been possible however without the technology and support of Ribbit. So when Ribbit asked me to talk about the project and how Ribbit’s technology helped make it a reality, I was more than happy to do so. Read the rest of this post…

Welcome to Some Random Dude

Posted on 12 January, 2009 at 4:27pm with 19 comments

It has been months in the making, but the new Some Random Dude is finally launch worthy. This site was completely re-thought from the ground up in concept, purpose and process which is why it took so long to get to this point. The site is currently in an alpha state, so there are many improvements and changes that will need to occur in the weeks and months to come. However, I feel as though the site is ready for public eyeballs. There has been a lot of thought put into this new site, so I am going to explain a little of what this new site is all about and where it is going to be headed. Read the rest of this post…

Franklin Street In a Month?

Posted on 5 November, 2008 at 11:47pm with 4 comments

If you have been to this site in the lately, you have most likely seen the cryptic banner on the top right signaling that something by the name of Franklin Street will be released in Winter 2008. Well, there is not too much winter left in this year, but now that sayhear.org has launched and a couple other projects have reached their conclusion, I can concentrate on this project once again. Yes, as it is almost certainly apparent, the blog redesign is what I am calling Franklin Street, but it is a whole lot more than just that. I am going to try something fairly ambitious, but it is going to take some time to get it right.

The new blog is coming along nicely and I have hopes that it will be completed before December. The total project however will take a tremendous amount of time to finalize correctly. I am curious, if anyone cares, how you would like to see this play out? Would you like to see a soft launch of Franklin Street in a month or two with progressive enhancements during the course of the following 2-3 months? Or would you find it better to launch everything finalized at once and wait another month or four? I am conflicted on this subject as I just want to get back to actually writing instead of building something to write.

I would be foolish and presumptuous to think anyone would ultimately care about this project – no matter how it launches. That being said, if anyone does have a thought they’d like to share on this subject, please leave your ideas/opinions in the comments.
