Some Random Dude

I have been getting a lot of emails and comments about this and I have rudely not replied to any of them. It is not because I am trying to be rude (I promise), I am just eyeball deep in a large project at the moment. Thus, I have had zero time to work on anything extracurricular, including sleep.

That said, after this project, the layout organizer library and releasing this blog’s theme are going to be my top priorities. Yes, I could release the library right now, but I would prefer to do it right. The project I am working on should be complete around early July, so I would expect the library to be released by mid to late July. This time, library will be released with full documentation, it will be also available as a SWC and it will be released on Google Code so that releases can actually be offered up on a more regular timeline.

I know this is not optimal and I apologize for the lack of updates, but better to just do this right than to hand out a half-ass intermediate release just to release the right way a couple weeks later.

As you may have seen in the past couple days, there has been basically radio silence on the blog. I am pretty tied up on a project that is taking all my time. So for the next week or so, there is not going to be too much activity on this site. After all this blows over, I will get back to business and begin the daily posts once again.

You may have noticed a lack of a full article in close to three weeks. This is mainly in part to a very busy schedule and some serious time dedicated to long-term projects. Unfortunately, this also has to do with me trying to alleviate some major server problems. In the past four days, I have had 8 system crashes, four of which happening on one day. This has led me to devote a large portion of time to remedy it and go on long (and overly-emotional) Twitter diatribes of my experience.

I have come to the conclusion that I just need to make a fresh start with a new hosting service. I have been with MediaTemple for years — the majority of which was on their Grid Service. Like many, I had my assorted collection of problems with the Grid, so I decided to move up to the DV. Due to recent events, I am thinking that is not the right fit either. So after chatting with a few folks, I am going to give Mosso’s new Cloud Server hosting a try. At this point, I just have a hard time justifying paying $100 a month for a VPS with 512 MB of dedicated memory when I can get 1GB of RAM for roughly half that price, based on my current traffic. This is going to suck up some time, so my posting will continue to be sparse, but my hope is this move will stop the crashes and I can once again get back to what this blog is about — writing articles.

I have been meaning to post this video for a while, if only for the sake of posterity. Right before the election, myself and the folks at Gershoni whipped up SayHear. It was a blast to work on and we felt quite proud of the results. This whole project would not have been possible however without the technology and support of Ribbit. It has been months in the making, but the new Some Random Dude is finally launch worthy. This site was completely re-thought from the ground up in concept, purpose and process which is why it took so long to get to this point. The site is currently in an alpha state, so there are many improvements and changes that will need to occur in the weeks and months to come. However, I feel as though the site is ready for public eyeballs.
