CSS Naked Day - I Feel So Exposed

As you can see, things are a little different around here right now…

I accidentally signed up for the Annual CSS Naked Day (don’t ask) that the perverted mind of Dustin Diaz conjured up. Now I’m stuck here, exposed, and not liking it one bit. Seriously though, after taking off the guise of CSS, I must say I’m not too impressed with how the site is laid out. I’m most likely going to spend some time cleaning up both the CSS and the HTML.

So feel free to cop a look while you still can. The peep show will be over soon. But not soon enough.

UPDATE: As you can see, things are back to normal. I am very glad to have my site back in all its un-naked glory. :)

pj, this is disgusting, gratuitous pornography that i do not condone. i am beyond offended.
now put on your clothes and clean up your act!

okay…lame jokes aside. i really do not understand what is going on here. this is really bizarre.

one last thought. i just noticed that you censored the dude’s private area with pixels!
that’s priceless, PJ. you need to take a screen shot of this page just for some good laughs in the future.

damn, this made me laugh pretty hard!

Sigh…

You and me both. I commented on Dustin’s blog about how I was looking forward to the turnout; never explicitly saying that I did not intend to join in on this little HTML peep-show. If I would have actually read the entire post by Dustin, I would have seen that if people were interested, they should comment on the post. So the next thing I know, I’m getting traffic referrals from his official CSS Naked Day micro-site. I then see my name on the list of participants… Yeah, my bad.

Still, the idea by Dustin is very good. What he is trying to do with this is to push sites to have strong, logical semantic markup with their HTML that is then styled with CSS to look how they want. I well developed HTML/CSS site will degrade very nicely once the CSS is stripped away. Mine held up pretty well, but there are some pieces I now really want to fix.

Anyways, have a look at Dustin’s site where he explains the idea behind this. It really does make a lot of sense. Still, I’m kicking myself. ;)

“i just noticed that you censored the dude’s private area with pixels!”

Dude, even I have some standards! (pun intended) ;)

I am not sure about this nakie day business either. I was first introduced to standards 101 when PJ wrote his DIVless article. To me, it is the difference between a piece of furniture made of real wood (solid site) v. something covered in veneer (site disguised with CSS). But, hell, what do I know? I am just excited that I know how to put a link into this comment!

i like leah’s metaphor. i understand it a whole lot better now. Its like Eames furniture vs. Ikea!
i think this is a sign that i need to read the “CSS for Dummies” manual.

Yeah, the only difference is that in this case, the Ikea would be considered good craft and worth more. It actually takes more time and skill to build the ‘Ikea’ model website as well…

Boy, for resembling an Ikea product, it doesn’t have anything in common with it. ;)

Hey, where’s the nakedness? I don’t see anything :P

(I guess I’m here far too late)

thanks for putting your clothing back on.
i was beginning to miss the ol’ some random dude.

P.J. — I meant to comment earlier, but I was laughing in the office at your logo’s pixelated privates. Just thought I’d let you know. Glad that you sucked it up and participated, regardless of whether or not you intended to sign up haha. We all learned a few things from CSS Naked Day and I think it was a great success.

[...] I had a little exposure to this concept of disabling CSS to test your site with CSS Naked Day. However, now that I have a bit more knowledge of the subject, it is making a lot more sense. Just like skiing without poles, you may not know the quality of your site until you turn off your CSS and check the site’s usability. Granted, I am not at that point yet with this site, but will be eventually. [...]
