Study in Pattern & Distortion

Posted on 28 April, 2005 at 5:22pm

It’s been WAY too long since I’ve done any type of visual exploration. I started up this exploration just by chance but I have come to really be excited about what I see. I’m trying to push distortion of images and the random patterns that come from it. I can’t really explain the process used to do this because all of these explorations were comprised of a very organic and random process. Before I get asked, there’s no “distortion pattern” filter in Photoshop for these pieces nor was there ever a strict methodology. I honestly could not re-create these pieces even if I tried…

What I really liked about these pieces are that the there are levels upon levels of patterns seen depending on how far you’ve zoomed into the image. From a distance, the image looks fairly solid and ordered but the further in you look at it, the more chaotic it becomes. I decided to leave color out of these studies since it would throw a whole other equation into the mix and I thought it would be better to take it one step at a time. Perhaps future studies will play around with patterns of color dispersed in the patterns of form.

By the way, props to Zoomify for an awesome Flash app that really allows these pieces to be shown in the best possible way.

  • What a interesant exploration!

  • What type of process did you use to make these patterns….if you can share that.
