Toilet Humor

Posted on 12 January, 2007 at 9:50am

I have made it a point to try to keep the integrity level of my posts relatively high (i.e. no monotonous dairy-esque posts), but I am going to break that rule with an image from last week.

Toilet

Yes, our toilet seat broke and yours truly thought he would be handy (in a very white-trash sort of way). Your eyes are not deceiving you, the toilet seat it duct-taped to the toilet. When you are in our apartment, you are living in luxury…

I know, I know. This is an absolutely useless post and completely out of the realm of professional. Nonetheless, with this visual ingrained into my retinas for quite some time, I thought I would share the love. I also have no doubt whatsoever this post will be one of the most viewed by the RSS subscribers. How am I so sure? Go to YouTube a random MySpace page or sometimes even Digg and it should clear things up.

  • Hilarious!!!
I am so sorry that the toilet seat broke. I hope no one was injured in the process….
You should have created a contest for who could offer the best white-trash fixer upper concept. Or at least have Wild Guess take a shot at mending the seat and maybe giving it an sleek designer face lift.

  • Are you somehow insinuating that duct tape is not sleek?

  • Looking at it from a conceptual art point of view, I see something that represents a life ring. You know…those floatation devices on boats. I just figured you could have stepped it up a notch. Maybe a crafty decopauge project to cover up the duct tape? Or knitting a warm, fuzzy covering to conceal the duct tape?

    A little more ghetto-fabulous, please.

How about that for a critique? ;-)

  • I’m truly happy that people are recognizing the core concept of this piece. I wanted to convey the feeling of safety from otherwise “dangerous” waters. The user will have a sense of calm and security knowing that duct tape (a waterproof adhesive strip) was used rather than some dainty strip of silk or string. The neutral gray colors were intended to not interfere with the “experience”.

OK, this is getting bad. I’m not taking this any further. :)

  • All in good fun.
AKA–Making fun of conceptual art and all the BS that goes into art school critiques.
AKA–Making friday go by just a little bit faster

At least we made $2.50 for charity. Plus an extra .75c from my contributions…

  • Definitely. This is just another reminder of how if one is a good enough bullshitter, they can make a masterpiece out of anything. We all should have been taking public speaking courses rather than core visual design curriculum.

  • What can I say?! Weird and funny at the same time. The last thing I was expecting on Some Random Dude was a toilet with duct tape on it. At the same time, I can’t help but feel that this would make it as modern art in some circles. I mean, how far is it really from an upside-down urinal that itself is called art? That’s where my sense of aesthetic fails me. I just don’t get it. But as an experiment, the next time you duct tape your toilet, you should put it up as art and see what your readers say. LOL
