Quick question for the audience: How Long is your loading time for this site?

Posted on 29 January, 2007 at 12:06pm

Hi guys, I wanted to get a little feedback from you if you would not mind. I am starting to notice some slightly bloated load times on this site every now and then. I am in the process of planning a cleanup phase for this site, but before I move forward I would love to get any feedback on how long the site takes to load for you on average. I am beginning to plan how I can pluck out pieces of HTML/Javascript throughout the site, but if load times are far worse than I currently think, I will begin reevaluating the current structure of the site.

Please, if you do not mind, take the time to let me know how your loading experience is for this site. I really want to make coming to Some Random Dude as enjoyable as possible. Waiting 8 seconds to have the page load is not what I would consider acceptable… Thanks ahead of time.

  • -New iMac at work: Instantaneous (1-2 seconds at most)
-G4 powerbook at home: 1-2 seconds, sometimes a little longer
(The damn thing usually takes forever to load flash sites.)
    -PC laptop: Instantaneous

    Good results. Good job!

  • Wow, that truly is unexpected – but very promising. Thanks so much for the input as always. :)

Any others? Visitors outside the US? Perhaps New Zealand or the UK to be more specific? ;)

  • PC Desktop: 2-2.5 seconds or so.
PC Laptop: 2-2.5 seconds or so.

In both cases, the site connects instantaneous, but it does take a second or two before I see anything other than a white screen. All in all, it’s not bad.

  • Hey Ryan, welcome and thanks so much for the feedback. I would like to cut that time down to 1.5 – 2 seconds if possible. Methinks I know how I could do that, I am just going to need to do a little research into the best way of doing so…

    Thanks again Ryan, much appreciated!

  • 10.719 seconds with cache disabled
2.782 seconds with stylesheets, etc cached.

Gotta love the FasterFox Page Load Timer extension!

  • Thanks Michael, I didn’t even think of using an extension to time the download time.

I think Michael’s post sealed the deal for me. Nearly 11 seconds for page load is well, well beyond acceptable. I am going to have to look through the site and see where I can clean things up.

Thanks again Michael, that was a huge help!

  • 11.453 seconds for me in the Netherlands on a 4000 kbps download connection. Another tool you can use is http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/wso.php?url=http://www.somerandomdude.net/blog/current-events/loading-time/

It seems you have a lot of different scripts and other elements to download. Those can really delay. Often it’s not so much the total amount of data but the amount of requests (different files)

  • Thanks for the extra info Matthijs and I really do apologize to you and everyone else for the outrageous load times you have been experiencing. I knew it was getting up there, but I just had no idea it was so bad.

I am going to try to make some quick fixes this weekend and then address some of the larger root causes in the next couple months.

Thanks for all the help everyone, it is greatly appreciated and I will get it fixed.
