Something is going on today because I have gotten roughly 80 comments that have made it through Akismet today - I cannot imagine how many Akismet has actually caught… I am posting this to see if any of you bloggers out there are experiencing the same thing. If so, does anyone use an extra anti-spam tool for cases such as this?

7.06.07 12:26 pmThere are a lot tools available for free download from the wordpress.org pages (see Extends -> Plugins or so). For example the Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin from sw-guide.de seems to be okay. Most image-based captchas are week implemented and sometimes already beaten by OCR software. These “Do you pass math” things are too much for comment spammers…
But they are not stopping manually by sub-humans (
) entered spam. For this here comes Wordpress itself handy. There is an option in your admin area were you can turn on to put new commentors comments in moderation queue. It’s here: Options->Discussion. There you have turn check the box beside “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”. Then their comments went into moderation queue.
In second time your commentors want’s to comment they don’t need to be approved anymore. This surely delays a lot their comments but it is a great deal for fighting comment spam.

Have you considered contacting Akismet? Maybe somesthing’s wrong on their end.

7.06.07 6:42 pmI received an unusually high number of comments that needed to be moderated today, but none actually made it through. I’ve tried another anti-spam WP plugin in the past, but I can’t be positive of the name as it seemed way too invasive to do me any good. Hopefully the surge doesn’t keep up much longer.

8.06.07 12:47 amMy spam filter is the home-made kind; the back end part of it which scans for certain words/links/urls etc in fields kept out about 95% of spam, but it’s the simple sum asked with every comment submission that really does the job. You should set something up like that

10.06.07 7:08 amI recently installed Bad Behavior (www.bad-behavior.ioerror.us/) and I haven’t even had any spam hit Akismet. And I haven’t been contacted by anyone who has been unable to post anything so it seems to be working.
