To go along with the Comment Love program, I have tried to add a bit more incentive for commenting. Last week, I implemented the CommentLuv plugin. I must say, the whole thing took no time at all – it was quite a breeze. There are so many ideas and pieces of functionality that I would like to implement on this site, but when I do not even have enough time to write real articles, I have a hard time trying to bite off anything of that scale. Still, slowly but surely, I am trying to add pieces to increase participation.
There is going to be a special month of Comment Love coming up, so I hope this extra addition will help stir up conversation.

13.04.2008 10:17 amIf you are looking to increase the number of people who post to your blog you could try two things:
#1 – Implement the “Top Commentators” plugin
#2 – Remove the “nofollow” tag to commenter names
As a warning, don’t do this unless you have the akismet anti-spam plug-in activated, otherwise you’ll get inundated with spam. This is especially true of the second option. Now that I think about it, don’t remove the nofollow tag.
Just my two cents :-)

17.04.2008 7:53 amThis sounds quite bizarre but I swear it works! Another method to get comments is the following:
1) make up a few fake comments initially (ie: the first 2/3) This actually entices people to then comment once they see that others are contributing. It’s like the rent-a-crowd theory – you have to have a few people at the venue, in order to get others to join in and stay at the party.

22.04.2008 8:41 pmAh yes, CommentLuv indeed. Perhaps I should add this to my blog? … Not sure really, I’m looking for real people to post comments, not bloggers. … HA! that was funny, no? OK maybe not. it is late. Anyhoo I do enjoy randomness. I’m also some random dude.

24.04.2008 4:17 amI have installed commentluv on my blog months ago, in an attempt to improve communication with my readers, but I also installed the do-follow and top commentators plugin so I can´t really tell whether the commentluv itself made a big change. Even if it would not make a big change, I would still keep the commentluv plugin because I really like using it myself, giving me a quick look at where my readers and commentators are coming from and what they are writing about ;)

25.04.2008 7:51 pmHave you found an increase in commenters since installing the plugin?
You know, the type that seem to be googling the phrase “commentLuv” and then just leaving a comment?

25.04.2008 8:39 pmThanks for the comments everyone – my apologies for not replying until now.
Helper of Venders – Thanks for the advice, I’ll pop in that other plugin into Wordpress and see how it works out. I have manual moderation of all comments + Akismet, so no spam will “slip through”. :)
Mr. Elms – Wow, there’s a keywordluv plugin as well? So much love/luv going around in the Wordpress world nowadays. I’ll be checking that out as well.
Camps Bay – Not a bad idea. My biggest commenter on this blog had stopped commenting as frequently because my site was crashing her browser. I’ve made some changes which (hopefully) has alleviated that situation, so we’ll see if comments go up again. Really good thoughts.
Junior – Funny enough, I haven’t ran into spam bombs yet… Fingers crossed.
Peter – Well, the amount of comments have gone up a bit, although my articles have admittedly been a little lack-luster for the past few months. I truly think that has a tremendous amount to do with lower comment counts. However, from what I’ve noticed, if all my posts were about CommentLuv, I would be A-OK.
Mr. Music – Hey man, some of my best comments come from fellow bloggers. And you may be some random dude, but I am the some random dude. ;)
Mirjam – Really good advice. No matter how the CommentLuv plugin affects my comment count, I am going to keep it. Giving a linkback to people who take the time to comment here is the least I can do.
Jamie – You know, it’s really funny – some of my most commented posts were those that took the least time and brainpower. I have worked on some involved projects that get little more than an acknowledgment and others where I get far more participation than I would have expected. This whole blogging thing is as fascinating as it is mysterious.
All that said, I refuse to change my format to get more comments. I will definitely adapt it, but I am not going to write specifically to get comments. Maybe that is being stubborn, but that is the beauty of having your own blog and not depending on it to put food on the table. :)

25.04.2008 8:40 pmIronically, the one thing all big bloggers tell you is to be responsive to comments/commenters in order to give them a reason to come back. I obviously got a big F in this instance…

6.06.2008 3:43 pmI’m new to blogging, but CommentLuv seems like an excellent idea. It both encourages commenters (spammers can still be moderated) and also keeps commenters’ anchor text clean, and rewards them with an extra back link.

4.07.2008 8:52 amThe thing I like most about CommentLuv is that it is a nice quiet way for you to let your readers advertise their own blogs. I’ve gotten many of my own readers through CommentLuv — and I hope to pass along the good Karma. I think I’m going to have to use Camps Bay idea and start posting my own comments to get the ball rolling!

16.07.2008 8:12 amCommentLuv is a great must have plugin that I would have used together with keywordluv if it just worked out. Since it doesn’t want to work out like that, I have to go with having a DoFollow commentlyv blog.

23.03.2009 10:43 pmHiya, i have seen your site when searching a few weeks ago and i really love the design! I just bought a new 3 character domain (cost me a packet) for a niche review blog, and i was wondering if your design is a free or paid one? I’m new to Wordpress and about to set it up, and i would really like to get something with a similar look to yours. Any ideas where i could download or buy something similar? Thanks for your help! :)
