Comment Love for November 2006

Posted on 2 December, 2006 at 11:16am

Here are the results for November’s Comment Love. There were 71 comments this month which ended up equaling $35.50. Kellie donated $5.50 to bring the total to $41.00. All $41.00 was donated to KQED. During the last pledge drive, KQED needed roughly $1.5 million in donations for the next year of programming. Based on that amount of money, our $41.00 made up for 0.0027% of the amount of money needed. Yes, that is a small percentage, but considering it was simply generated from people commenting on a random blog, it is not too bad. Looking at it another way, 0.0027% equals roughly 14.2 minutes of programming time for the year. Hey, that is almost an entire segment!

November looked like we were going to make the $50 cap for sure until Thanksgiving rolled around (thanks a lot pilgrims…). I am guessing something similar will happen, but just on a larger scale, for Christmas. Still, I would love to be proved wrong…

  • Congratulations PJ, and to everyone who commented. It’s really nice to get these updates and see where the money’s going. I really respect the fact that you’re following through with this and not just letting it fade into the background. Most inspiring :)

  • Damn, I better start writing for this month so I can give a something more significant than $5.50…..

For people who need a little more motivation or want to “get something” out of their donations, join KQED’s wine club! Spend a bunch of money on wine and proceeds benefit KQED. It’s a win-win situation. Get drunk for a good cause. http://www.kqedwineclub.org/

Here’s a cause that is very similar to Somerandomdude’s comment love campaign. Every person who interacts with this flash site by lighting a candle donates $1 to an HIV/AIDS fund. Fortunately, the $100,000 quota for donations were already met!

  • Good stuff everyone. :D

Maybe making more interactive type of posts would help comment love. There’s another blog I read that has posts like ’show us your smarts’ where the poster gives you some sort of subject like ‘things I didn’t know about..’ for everyone to comment on. A few days later the original poster makes a new post with their favourite comment or fact.

You could also make a riddle each week for people to answer, I’ve seen some where a blogger posts a series of facts about a place on earth and people can try and find where it is.

    Just some ideas… :p

  • Steve – Thanks so much – I can assure you, this feature is not going away anytime soon… :D

Kellie – Great links, thanks so much for the lovely links. Rad as always.

Tim – Awesome idea man – I’m trying to to fairly good success with the Design Open Discussion posts, but I think it’s a little too random and I have not participated at all due to time constraints. I really think those ideas would work really well and I’m going to find a way to incorporate them into this blog’s theme and feel. Great feedback! :)
