Why No Articles This Week?

Posted on 24 April, 2008 at 9:08pm with 3 comments

So it is a Thursday and there are still no posts on Some Random Dude for this week. What gives? Well, I am most certainly writing and putting together a collection of posts and (believe it or not) real articles. However, I am holding onto them until the month of May where I will (hopefully) be pushing much more in-depth content on a weekly basis than any other month I have blogged. The reason for this is that May is going to be a special month of Comment Love, where the maximum donation will up increased to $100. This means that we will need 200 comments during the month of May to hit the goal. Considering the highest month of comments was a little over 100, I am really going to have to work for those 200 comments.

To get the roughly 50 comments a week, the following must happen:

  1. I will need to produce some really good articles – probably more frequent than on a weekly basis.
  2. I will need serious help from readers like you to not only comment, but to encourage others to comment as well
  3. The month of May must have exceedingly above-average traffic

The only thing that is truly in my control is the first item, so I am working hard to make that happen. If all goes well, I will have some pretty cool stuff coming out in May (fingers crossed). I will be finishing up projects that I swore I would complete and finish articles I swore I would write in order to make this happen. However, to do this, the rest of April is going to have to suffer a bit. I should still be able to put the weekly photograph and the weekly links up, but not much else.

Just a quick update.

A Special Month of Comment Love Coming in May

Posted on 14 April, 2008 at 9:30am with 2 comments

Based off a recent comment on this blog, I am taking up the commenter’s suggestion and am dedicating May’s Comment Love towards the troops in Iraq. I have been a staunch critic of this war from very early on in its inception. I also have the sense that most of the regular readers of this blog are not too fond of it as well. However, regardless of what anyone thinks of this war, there are many people who are suffering greatly, on both sides, because of it. So, in the month of May, the Comment Love will go towards helping U.S. troops and Iraqi families affected by the war.

At this point, I am leaning towards The International Rescue Committee for Iraqi Families and The Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust for U.S. troops. These are still tentative as my knowledge in this area is still limited. I chose these two as they address what I consider to be key issues in aiding victims of this war as well as their low percentage of overhead – meaning more dollars go to the cause. May’s dollar limit will be increased to $100 and the total will be given equally to both charities. So if we hit the $100 max, both charities will get $100.

The past few months have seen some lower-than-average comment counts – due mostly to my lack of posting worthwhile articles. I am planning to go above and beyond the norm in terms of posting in May so as to encourage as much discussion (and subsequent donations). I am truly hoping this equates to more comments.

I am still very open to suggestions for better charities to give to for either causes. Please feel feel to contact me with your thoughts.

CommentLuv (Quietly) Implemented

Posted on 11 April, 2008 at 3:16pm with 35 comments

To go along with the Comment Love program, I have tried to add a bit more incentive for commenting. Last week, I implemented the CommentLuv plugin. I must say, the whole thing took no time at all – it was quite a breeze. There are so many ideas and pieces of functionality that I would like to implement on this site, but when I do not even have enough time to write real articles, I have a hard time trying to bite off anything of that scale. Still, slowly but surely, I am trying to add pieces to increase participation.

There is going to be a special month of Comment Love coming up, so I hope this extra addition will help stir up conversation.

Processing Motion Experiment – Wandering Blossoms

Posted on 6 April, 2008 at 11:26pm with 6 comments

Processing Experiment Wandering BlossomsI truly am loving how I can take a piece of code and begin to have it exist in various mediums. This experiment was actually posted to my Vimeo account quite a while ago, but I wanted to output this project as a vector piece as well. I actually think my previous project would be ended up as a good candidate for vector output as well – I may go back and add that at a later time. This project was just another test on playing with motion preceding my knowledge of the noise() method. Looking back, a similar look in motion could have been achieved with far fewer lines of code. Nonetheless, I think the final result ended up being quite nice.

I hope to continue to have the time to post these projects. I feel as though I am (slowly) getting a grasp on how this whole Processing thing works. My goal is to cross-pollinate any future Processing projects with Flash/Flex projects. I have a few ideas on how that may just happen.
