So I Am Starting to Twitter

I have been playing with Twitter for the past few months now and I have decided to temporarily take the plunge and devote much more time into it. I am planning to integrate my Twittering into this blog – which required this plugin, which required a WordPress upgrade which ended up creating all hell with some of my plugins, which ended up clearing all my tags once someone commented, which required me to frantically try to get my site back to normal.

Good times.

If you Twitter, by all means, please head over to my profile and add me as a friend. I have been very resistant to the social networking scene as I feel many, if not most, lack substance. What I like about Twitter is the fact it is a tool that can be used however one desires – the social aspect is merely a feature. Due to this flexibility, I am going to give it a go.

Integrating some aspects of my Twittering to the blog should not take too long so they should be popping up in the next couple weeks… Along with the photoblog and the functionality updates to Some Random Dude… Yes, I know I bit off more than I can chew. Still, I think this could add a lot to the site, so I am looking forward to trying it out. Please let me know your thoughts and, by all means, Sign up for an account and add me as a friend so you can join in on the fun.

  1. Unfortunately, I am becoming more entangled into the web 2.0/social networking phenomenon. I have accounts on Yelp, Myspace (just to spy on old enemies), a few others I’ve forgotten about, and I post comments on a myriad of blogs. Twitter looks interesting and I may give in to it by signing up.

However, I don’t quite understand its purpose, if you could explain it to me in a nutshell. Is it a voyeuristic site that lets friends know what you are up to at random times? Would strangers even care to read my whereabouts? Perhaps I am just dense from all my days of partying and spraymount, but their website doesn’t give too much explanation.

  2. I think the definition I like the most is something along the lines “micro-blogging”. A good explanation can be read here.

What makes Twitter powerful is that you can use outside apps to both post Twitters and read what all your friends are Twittering about. I would suggest Twitterific or Tweetr if you’re into Apollo applications.

  3. Hmm, I like the new Twitter feature that you have implemented into the site. However, I think it should go beneath the comment love section.

  4. Man, you’re fast. Do you feel that way because you use the ‘Recent Comments’ section often? I thought the Twitter area would be updated relatively quickly, so I wanted it to be vertically higher. Perhaps I need to re-think the layout a tad…

  5. Yes. i know that Wild Guess and I always enjoy seeing how far you have come with the comment love tally, and who has written recent comments. It’s also fun to see a preview of what a person has written and I am often compelled to read the entire comment so I click on that person’s link…

Honestly, its all for the sake of convenience, as well as a personal nit-pick. It wouldn’t kill me to see the Twitter box above Comment Love, but I just figured that more people, especially new folks, would be drawn to the comment love section first. 😉

  6. My thinking was the header is a real quick way to see what the current tally for Comment Love is. I do agree though, perhaps I should put some more thought into the organization of the sidebar. To be honest, I am not too happy with how it stands at this point… This whole blog thing, it sure is a time-suck. 😉
